This recipe is simple, cost effective, and does not require any fancy tools or methods.

When I walk the aisle of the supermarkets, I cringe at the toxic chemicals and ingredients on packages. Sure, they are time effective, but that's about all they offer our families. I can do one better!

It's time to take matters into your own hands—and to your kitchen counter—with this eco-friendly, homemade dishwasher powder recipe. Not only does it deliver sparkling dishes, but it’s also safe for you, your loved ones, and the environment.

Ready to make dishwashing a breeze? Let’s dive in!

The Recipe: Sparkling Dishes with Five Simple Ingredients:

Method:

  • 1 cup washing soda – Your go-to grease and grime fighter.
  • 1 cup borax – Cleans and disinfects with ease.
  • ½ cup citric acid – Cuts through hard water stains and adds shine to glasses.
  • ¼ cup fine salt – Softens water for improved cleaning.
  • 10–15 drops of essential oil – Choose lemon, tea tree, or lavender for a fresh, clean scent.
  1. Combine the dry ingredients: Grab a large mixing bowl and combine the washing soda, borax, citric acid, and salt. Stir thoroughly to ensure even blending.
  2. Incorporate the essential oil: Drop your chosen essential oil into the mixture, stirring gently to distribute the scent evenly.
  3. Store smartly: Transfer the powder into an airtight container to maintain its freshness and prevent clumping. Consider adding a small silica packet to absorb moisture and extend shelf life.
  4. Dishwasher-ready: Use 1–2 tablespoons of powder in your dishwasher’s detergent compartment per load. Sit back and let your homemade magic work wonders.

Rinse Aid:

  • Distilled white vinegar
  • Teaspoon citric acid
  • Boiling water

Method:

  1. Add the boiling water and vinegar to a heat proof glass jug.
  2. Stir in citric acid until dissolved
  3. Pour into the rinse aid compartment

*The thing I really LOVE about this recipe, is that we are on very harsh bore water, and this leaves the dishes clean without the murky water streaks.

*If you're like me, and boiling the kettle and making this mixture is too much sometimes, I simply just fill the rinse aid compartment with vinegar.

Pro Tips for Perfect Dishwasher Powder

  • Dealing with hardening: If your powder tends to clump over time, try using fine-grain salt or increase the ratio slightly.
  • Fragrance swap: Get creative with your essential oils—combine lemon with eucalyptus or opt for soothing lavender and mint.
